C is for Connelly

Better luck next year, Steve.

I had Memphis losing at this stage (of course, not to Mizzou). It seems to me for the last number of years, the Tigers have blown through C-USA only to receive their comeuppance once the real games began. They were good in the days of Keith Lee, but, of course, the team's members were also paid professionals back then.

I learned my lesson last year when I picked the Tigers to go all the way. I.e., add this to the list of sports bromides: Don't pick the Memphis Tigers to go too far in the NCAA tourney.

But what do I know? After all, I'm ahead of all of six people in this year's pool.

I have one correction to check when I get home. If you think there is an error in your score please leave a comment or send me an email!

I stand corrected ...

DarLucky points out that, not only was Memphis in last year's Final Four, the Tigers actually went to the championship game.

It's no wonder I'm foundering in this year's pool.

Ha ha, yet I bet you have no problem recalling the finalists from many of the 1960s and 1970s tournaments...

I had bet against UConn in my various brackets. Happy to be wrong.

Go Big East!

David, we can remember Dean Smith's Four Corners too!

From the old farts corner ...

Perhaps the only game I still rue not having found a bookie for was the 1989 first round game between the Alonzo Mourning-led Georgetown Hoyas and the Pete Carrill-led Princeton Tigers.

The line was outrageous. Was it thirty? It didn't matter, but those who knew Ivy League basketball knew better. There was absolutely no way the Hoyas could win in a rout, because Princeton would never allow them that many shots. Final score: G'town 50, Princeton 49.

How was this possible? you might ask. There was no shot clock in those days, so Princeton could take its sweet time before it took a shot--which was invariably a layup after 400 screens and as many passes.

Once the solons of the NCAA instituted the shot clock, games like this classic became impossible, and, I might add, marginal teams (i.e., those with a 13th or lower seed) didn't have a chance to advance.

Is the game better? I'm not sure, but it's certainly ultimately less competitive.

Anyway, Steve's reference to UNC's legendary four-corner offense (which depended on the lack of a shot clock to succeed) made me think of the time when the mighty Hoyas almost were outscored by a bunch of midgets with SAT scores in the 1500s.
